The Blazing Forest is an ancient and dangerous magical wilderness existing on an independent parallel plane and connected to the material world through naturally occurring dimensional entrances known as rooted thresholds, or roots. These roots allow geographically distant locations to open into the same continuous wilderness, though their positions in the material world do not correspond directly to locations or distances within the Forest itself. Normie stories, places, and fictional traditions associated with the Black Forest, the Forbidden Forest, Mirkwood, and similar impossible or dangerous woods are regarded by Wickborne as shadows of the real thing rather than reliable maps of it, preserving distorted cultural memories of encounters with its thresholds, creatures, or magic. Despite its name, the entire Forest is not perpetually aflame; its defining heat appears to move beneath the land and through its ancient root systems, allowing different reaches to contain varied climates and environments. Rooted thresholds may become dormant, unstable, or temporarily inaccessible, and rare accidental normie crossings are believed to have contributed to centuries of supernatural forest folklore. The Forest became a recurring site in Kolya Volkanev's childhood, where Varkas Drakovich used it for punishment, testing, training, and reward. Maelis Vire also entered the Blazing Forest as a young child through the ancient German root, where she encountered Thros and formed their miraculous bond.
